7 Benefits of Indian Head Massage

It sounds divine doesn’t it?  A real treat! But actually, Indian Head Massage isn’t simply a ‘treat’ – the benefits are really rather crucial and can assist with a variety of physical and emotional problems and concerns. Here are a few of them:

  1. Helps prevent migraines, headaches and back pain

Often tension in the upper back, neck and head can lead to migraines, headaches and back pain that can make for uncomfortable living on a day to day basis and sometimes even lead to depression.

A massage therapist will start the Indian Head Massage by applying pressure to points in the upper back, arms and shoulders that will release muscles and knots. They will then move to the neck and head to reduce headache-causing blockages and encourage better circulation of the cerebral fluid.

  1. Promotes hair growth

This is a lovely side effect of the Indian Head Massage (if you’re trying to grow your hair anyway…). The massage increases nourishment and oxygen to the scalp and hair follicle that in turns stimulates hair growth. It’s a one way ticket to long, luscious locks!

  1. Detoxifies the body by stimulating lymphatic drainage

Indian Head Massage stimulates and improves lymphatic drainage and blood flow to the neck thus helping to remove waste products from the body.

  1. Relieves sleeplessness, restlessness and insomnia

These are often side-effects of stress and Indian Head Massage will immediately relieve stress and promote relaxation by attacking the physical symptoms, thus allowing for a deeper sense of wellbeing and relaxation and opening your body to better rest.

  1. Relieves symptoms of anxiety and depression

Massaging the head encourages the supply of oxygen to the brain which is one of the best ways of reducing anxiety and of lifting one’s mood. Oxygen helps you think clearly and creatively and a similar effect is experienced through exercise.

  1. Renews energy levels

An Indian Head Massage works with the Ayurvedic concept that goes beyond the limits of healing and places emphasis on balance. Working on the chakras through Indian Massage has a powerful effect in bringing the energy of the body back into balance.

  1. Boosts memory capabilities

Often we have short-term memory difficulties because our brains are overloaded with disorganised thoughts, making it very difficult for us to efficiently ‘log’ and collect thoughts and occurrences.

Indian Head Massage slows us down, sensual awareness takes over, thoughts quieten and awareness is brought to the forefront. Think of it like someone pressing your ‘reset’ button.

Finding Focus

Isn’t it funny how when something slots into place in life, it is echoed in other areas?

My yoga and mindfulness practice has been looking inward and focusing on feeling specific points with all my attention. This has helped me work out my own phsical and mental blocks.

This has transferred to my work at Indigo Spring as a massage therapist. I have been using my focus to give my full attention to the bodywork with my client.

How do I get there?

Environment.

I have created an environment where all the senses lead to the desired mood. Usually peacefulness and tranquility. The lighting colours and effects, layout and objects in the room, the plant choice, aromatherapy and music choice, all contribute to this.

Preparation

Before I receive a guest I spend time analysing their notes, looking at progression and focusing on them. I spend some time doing breath work  and some yoga stretches.

During the treatment

I ask questions to help the guest feel themselves focus on their body and mind. I breathe in time with my guest. I react to what I feel, and I vary my pressure, speed and focus on different areas.

After the treatment

I reflect back to my guest on what I found and ask for their feedback too.

Outcome

The outcome of this approach has pleasantly surprised me. Every single guest has reported a much deeper relaxation and the ability to “go there”. The reported feedback has been 100% positive.

So why not give a little more focussed attention in areas of your life? And see what happens…

Rebalance and Reset

Ever feel like you need to rebalance your life? To RESET or turn it off and on again?

Do you seem to reel from one illness or pain to another without really feeling like yourself?

It sounds like you would benefit from massage. It’s all too easy to keep going, continue with the routines we created long ago and which may no longer suit our needs. Complementary therapies all begin with a consultation to assess your needs. Your physical, mental and emotional needs. They suggest a treatment programme and assess its effectiveness. The actual mode used, is only oe aspect of the treatment. By signing up to a course of treatment, we accept that we want things to shift. The massage therapist will then help you to work with this.

At Indigo Spring, we want our guests to reach their ultimate balanced and happy lives, so we are committed to discovering new and additional treatments to keep their treatment relevant and inspiring.

We look forward to seeing you very soon at Indigo Spring Massage.

Times they are a changin’

I can’t help but notice how many more young people are booking in for massages.

When I was in my 20’s,  any spare money, was spent on meals out and alcohol. But spending priorities seem to have shifted, these days with the Millenials sat at screens for much of the day, health and wellbeing is much higher on the agenda. Young people thing nothing of having a gym membership, eating to a nutrition plan, and being pro-active about their health.

35% of my guests for March and April this year were under 35. Many choose to book monthly massages for maintenance of their health rather than only seeking treatment after a problem occurs.

Why not follow suit and book in with Indigo Spring, to keep you full of life?

Massage for anxiety and depression

Massage has so many benefits that sometimes I forget just how powerful it can be for those living with anxiety or depression.

When circumstances become too difficult and your ability to cope is dwindling, massage can give real relief and help you to get through the day, and to gain a new perspective.

Massage helps to slow down heart rate and lower blood pressure. It improves circulation which helps keep extremities warm. The use of breathing techniques in massage therapy, help to reduce stress and aromatherapy can help body respond to botanicals to change mood.

At Indigo Spring I see lots of ailments, most of them involve mental as well as physical aspects. I love that massage is holistic. And treats the whole person, not only the symptoms.

Breathing Technique to lower anxiety

Inhale for the count of 4

hold your breath for the count of 7

exhale for the count of 8

Repeat

I hope this helps

Mother’s Day – Taking Time for me?

This week has seen a raft of celebrations as we think about Mothers. Our own mothers, ourselves as mothers, our daughters as mothers. The mother we become to our beloved pets. The mother we are to those around us who need love care and support. It’s a refreshing time as it hits us amongst the bright yellow of daffidils and the longer sunnier days.

Indigo Spring has seen a wave of people being treated to massages and treating their mums this week. It has made me consider once more the complex roles we inhabit as we get older. Too often we push our own needs to one side as we act with selflessness to help others. And we ask is it selfish to look after ourselves?

The more we drain our resources the less we have to give others around us. I see people everyday who carry these stresses on their shoulders like a milkmaid’s yoke. And remind them that you can’t drink from an empty cup. It is essential for us to refresh and renew our energy levels in order to continue to give.

So next time you see an opportunity to fill your cups. Go ahead. Be the mother you really want to be. With energy and love to share with others.

The weight of the world on my shoulders.

When one problem after another comes your way, and you cope by internalising and taking a deep breath and carrying on, eventually the stress will manifet itself in the body. This usually is present in the neck and shoulders and across the upper back. The trapezius muscle absorbs the tension and enlarges and stiffens in response.

This is treatable however. Regular massage to this area will reduce the tension and soften the muscle.

Taking time for yourself will also help to balance the stresses placed on you in daily life. Commiting to your own wellbeing is a step in the right direction for you to feel more balanced again.

Put an Indigo Spring back in your step.

For some people, massage therapy and complementary therapy is something for when your health hits a crisis point. Have you heard people say this sort of thing? is it you?

“The pain in my back that I’ve coped with and got used to for the last year or so, has now got me laid up in bed”.

“The lack of mobility in my shoulder has been managed by using the other hand, but now that shoulder can’t move either.”

“I can handle my stress by drinking wine, but every weekend has turned into every night”

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Homeostasis

Our bodies will heal themselves given the right environment. They want to return to Homeostasis or balance. But ignoring initial twinges or changes in behaviour, can lead to much more difficulties down the line.

Be Proactive

Being Proactive with our health doesn’t necessarily mean we have to go on diets, exercise all the time, spend all of spare time and money on the latest fad. But it does mean making small changes to areas of our lives that no longer work for us, to enable a better sense of wellbeing.

We know we can reduce our sugar and junk food intake and our weight will decrease. That stretching and exercising a little will make a big difference.

Why not think the same about your body’s systems? Regular massage therapy will reduce stress, by lowering heart rate and blood pressure, encourage the flow of endorphins and revitalise the lymphatic system. It will help relieve muscular pain and tension by stimulating the circulatory system.

A massage once or twice a month will help to keep all your systems working well and creases ironed out before they become unmanageable.

Isn’t it too Self Indulgent?

This comes up regularly when I talk to people who don’t make time for a massage – massage therapy still has a little way to go for some people. And so I thought it would be interesting to explore a little about the reason why.

Firstly, many of us were brought up to be selfless and hardworking. Massage can seem to be too self indulgent, but recent research leads us to realise the benefits of looking after yourself, your mind and your body, in order to be the best person to those around you. The prevalence of “Wellbeing” activities highlights this change in perspective.

Secondly, massage goes way beyond its remit of relaxation. Massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system which returns the body to its resting and digesting state. It diminishes pain and allows the body to heal itself.

Massage also helps muscles to re-align and work more efficiently, this improves our flexibility and mobility.

Think of massage as preventative care.

You don’t need to wait until you are in pain to book a massage. Regular treatments are advised to keep us all in good working order. Make it a lifestyle choice to have fortnightly or monthly massages.

Massages don’t need to break the bank, many massage therapists have discounts for multiple bookings or for recommending others. Don’t be afraid to talk to your therapist about this, they won’t always advertise the fact.

Some people are put off massages after they have had one with too firm or too light pressure. Communication is the key, and this is your massage. The therapist should ask you for your preference of pressure and ask if the pressure is ok during the massage. But if you want it changing just let them know.

Massage will help you to restore your internal equilibrium so don’t think of it as self indulgent.

View is as a monthly health MOT to keep you working at your best!
